Abstract

Background: Medication safety is a crucial effort to prevent medication errors, which can have serious consequences, including health complications and even death. Most of these deaths are caused by medication errors. Therefore, engaging with patients and the community is a crucial strategy to prevent medication errors.

Purpose: To increase public awareness of the correct and safe use of medications through the concept of medication safety.

The counseling was attended by 30 people from the working area of the UPT. Long Inpatient PKM. The material was delivered through presentations using visual media such as educational banners and posters, an explanation of what medicational safety is and the DAGUSIBU Motto. Measurement of the level of knowledge using a questionnaire sheet with 7 questions about DAGUSIBU (Get, Use, Save and Dispose) with answers in the form of; "YES" or "NO" and "TRUE" or "WRONG. Furthermore, the accumulated value of the questionnaire is grouped into the low category if the score is ≤69, the good category if the score = 70-75 and the very good category if the score is ≥76. As an evaluation of the activity by looking at changes in the level of knowledge given before the educational activity (pre-test) and after the educational activity (post-test).

Results: Data obtained from the pre-test on the level of knowledge of participants before the outreach activity showed that 2 participants (6.6%) were in the low category, 14 participants (46.7%) were in the good category, and 14 participants (46.7%) were in the very good category. Meanwhile, the level of knowledge of participants after the post-test on the outreach activity decreased to zero, 2 participants (6.6%) were in the good category, and 28 participants (93.4%) were in the very good category. The number of participants who understood the definition of medication safety increased from 7 participants (23.3%) to 28 participants (93.3%), and those who understood how to store medications properly increased from 18 participants (60.0%) to 29 participants (96.7%).

Conclusion: This outreach activity effectively increases public awareness and knowledge in understanding the concept of medication safety so that it can reduce the risk of medication errors and improve the quality of public or patient health.

Suggestion: It is hoped that medication safety education activities can be conducted routinely and periodically with a wider target audience, so that providing treatment to patients does not create new problems arising from a lack of understanding of medication safety in the community.
